Downtown Austin was full of people wearing costumes and people bar hoppers on Halloween night from Sixth Street to the Warehouse District. There were long lines at the bars that were open on Sixth Street. Some people decided to head over to Speakeasy on Congress Street, where the line was slightly shorter. Nevertheless, the blocked-off streets were bustling with people of all ages well past midnight.

Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg (RBG – 1933-2020) died on Friday, September 18, 2020, at the age of 87 due to metastatic pancreatic cancer. RBG will be missed.

President Bill Clinton nominated Ruth Bader Ginsberg to the United States Supreme Court in 1993. It was not his first choice.

President Bill Clinton’s original choice for Supreme Court Judge in 1993 was Governor Cuomo but he would not do it according to Clinton.

Marty Ginsberg started to toot the horn for his wife because she was reportedly shy. After the help from Marty Ginsberg, Ruth Bader Ginsburg moved from number 22 on the Supreme Court nominee list to number one. Ginsberg stated that Marty was the best thing that ever happened to her.

Clinton later interviewed Ruth Bader Ginsburg and literally within 15 minutes Clinton said he knew she was going to become the 107th Justice to the United States Supreme Court. Clinton said the interview turned an honest discussion and conversation about how to make law for the moment and the future. RBG was confirmed 96 to 3. She was the second woman on the U. S. Supreme Court Bench. RBG served on the Supreme Court for more than 27 years. During her tenure on the Supreme Court, RBG was known to her fans as “The Notorious R.B.G.” RBG became an icon to women and girls across the United States as a staunch advocate for women’s rights.

Sandra Day O’Conner was the first woman confirmed to the U. S. Supreme Court Bench in 1981. O’Conner is still living and is 90 years old.

President Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsberg to the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1981. She served until her appointment to the U. S. Supreme Court.

An innocent beautiful Black child pondering his future https://www.atxdigitalphotography.com/blog/2020/6/an-innocent-beautiful-black-child-pondering-his-future

A beautiful innocent Black child holding a Black Lives Matter sign. -2020. Black_Lives_Matter-2020Black Austin Rally and March - June 7, 2020 Michael Lewis Global Photography, All Rights Reserved

One day, the parents of this beautiful Black innocent child must have “The Talk.”

As Black parents know, “The Talk” has nothing to do with birds and bees. It is about surviving police encounters, being aware of your rights, and learning how to live within a complex, systemic, centuries-old framework of race-based prejudice, violence, and discrimination.

The Talk is akin to a rite of passage for many Black children, especially boys and young men. Primarily, they are taught how to behave in the presence of police to mitigate potential harm: no sudden movements, don’t question why you’re being stopped, comply with all verbal commands, never raise your voice.

The main objective is to make it home alive.

It is a discussion many Black parents consider a necessary evil, dreading the day when their children go from innocent-looking children to threats in the eyes of a historically racist society. And it is a discussion many of their white co-workers, friends, and neighbors may be ignorant about or avoid it since it does not affect them.

For Beer Drinkers: Support the Cause

With the current tensions that are rising, we thought that it was of grave importance to start the Black Is Beautiful initiative. We took a stout recipe and decided to call on our peers in the brewing industry to collaborate in unison for equality and inclusion amongst people of color. All proceeds from the purchase of these releases will be donated to local funds that support police brutality reform and legal defenses.

Please look for updates from your local breweries when this beer will release. If your favorite brewery hasn't yet signed on, shout us out and tag them with the #BlackIsBeautifulBeer. We appreciate you for supporting our cause and can't wait for everyone to get a taste of all the variations of Black is Beautiful.

These protests against racism and systemic police brutality are many layers deep. People are protesting after the police kill a Black man, then it is quiet and we hope for justice. Sometime later, the same thing happens again. Then we repeat the same process over again. People are tired of protesting with little or no results.

Police departments are spending millions of dollars on police training, but police are still killing Black men. It is so hard to watch Black men being murdered in broad daylight on television by cops and ex-cops.  Then they walk away like it is part of their jobs to murder us. How many times do we see white people killed on television by cops? Are we coming to another 1968 riot?

The pain, outrage, and desperation have spilled out into the streets all over America.
Minneapolis Police Chief stated, “Silence and inaction is complicity” and “the Floyd incident is a violation of humanity.”

The nation appears to be at a tipping point. Black people are risking their lives in the middle of a pandemic to protest in the streets across the nation.

Over 40 American cities have curfews as of May 31, 2020.

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan died on Friday, May 22, 2020, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He was 78

Sloan served as head coach of the Utah Jazz from 1988-2011, and with the help of Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton and Hall of Fame power forward Karl Malone led the Jazz to the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998 and lost to the Chicago Bulls in both years. These were the Utah Jazz franchise’s only Finals appearances.

In those back-to-back Finals trips, the Jazz fell in six games to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls,  a franchise where Sloan spent ten seasons as a player and coached for three seasons from 1979-82. ESPN just televised the Last Dance that chronologies how the Chicago Bulls beat the Utah Jazz both years.

Sloan recorded 1,221 regular-season wins as a coach, the fourth most in NBA history.

Rest in peace, Jerry Sloan. We will miss you.

Happy 89th Birthday William Shatner https://www.atxdigitalphotography.com/blog/2020/4/happy-89th-birthday-william-shatner

William Shatner (89 years old) was in Austin in 2019 at the Bass Concert Hall to share fascinating and humorous behind the scenes stories from portraying the original "Captain James T. Kirk" in the Star Trek television series. Shatner also spoke  about his life, movies, and 50 plus years as an award-winning actor, producer and director. We enjoyed a screening of Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan before his presentation.

The complete introductory speech, spoken by William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship USS Enterprise at the beginning of each Star Trek episode, is:

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

My favorite Star Trek television series created by Gene Roddenberry and starred First Officer and Science Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Chief Medical Officer Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Chief Engineer Lt. Commander Scotty (James Doohan),  Lt. Sulu (George Takei) and Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), the first African-American woman to hold such an essential role in an American television series. I have seen all 79 episodes numerous times over the past 40 plus years.

Three-time Grammy Award winner & Soul Artist Bill Withers died at 81 https://www.atxdigitalphotography.com/blog/2020/4/three-time-grammy-award-winner-soul-artist-bill-withers-died-at-81 Three-time Grammy Award winner and Soul Artist Bill Withers died Monday, March 30, 2020, from heart complications in Los Angeles, according to a family representative. Withers was 81.

Withers is survived by his wife and two children.

Withers (William Harrison Withers Jr.), who enjoyed a long list of hits that included "Lean On Me," "Lovely Day," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Grandma's Hands" and "Just The Two of Us," will certainly be missed. I have played his music hundreds of times in my life on 8-track tapes, cassettes, albums, and CDs.

Lovely Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEeaS6fuUoA

Bill Withers made history at the 30th annual Grammy Awards on March 2, 1988, becoming the first songwriter to win for best R&B song three times. He took the award that year for his 1972 classic "Lean on Me."

Withers had previously won the best R&B song for writing his classic breakthrough hit "Ain't No Sunshine" (1971) and for co-writing (with Ralph MacDonald and William Salter) the smooth 1981 hit "Just the Two of Us," a collaboration with Grover Washington Jr. (my favorite jazz artist).

All these years later, just four other songwriters have equaled Withers' achievement of winning the best R&B song three times. One songwriter, Beyoncé Knowles (Queen Bee), has won it four times.

Here is a letter from the Withers Family:

We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones. We know his legacy will live in our hearts and yours for generations to come.

We will miss his sharp wit, playful sense of humor, and no-nonsense way of turning a phrase as no one else could. He was a deeply proud man, full of integrity and principle, and we as his family are immensely proud of him for sharing his musical and lyrical gifts so elegantly and generously with the world. A master of writing love songs, he loved music, cherished and protected his family, and our love for him is immeasurable.

With Love,

The Withers Family

Rest in Peace Bill Withers. We will miss you.

WHAT: While the measures being taken to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, such as social distancing and business closures, are necessary, they will likely have a more significant impact on the already fragile economic ecosystems of Black communities and Black-owned small businesses. More than ever, access to accurate information and opportunity is power as the economic health and stability of Black communities depend on it.

Thus, as part of its ESSENCE of the Matter: COVID-19’s Impact on Black

America virtual platform, ESSENCE is hosting its first “Digital Dose: Everything Black-Owned Businesses Should Know about Leveraging the CARES Act to Financially Survive COVID-19” – a 90-minute information and Q&A session focused on providing urgent information on the Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”) under the newly-passed stimulus package, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The PPP authorizes up to $350 billion in forgivable loans to small businesses and other organizations to pay their employees during the COVID-19 crisis, as well as other allowed operational expenses. Applications open on Friday, April 3. Session participants will better understand what is included in the PPP, eligibility and how it impacts them, as well as the role of Black-owned businesses in community.

Rogers sold over 120 millions albums in six decades.

The Grammy-Award winner was known for his music like “Lucille” in 1977 and “Island in The Stream” in 1983 with Dolly Parton but made his fortune from the movie, “The Gambler.” You’ve Got to know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em is about more than gambling, it is about life, according to Rogers.

Dolly Parton paid tribute to Kenny Rogers on Twitter Saturday (https://twitter.com/DollyParton/status/1241370371628183552). “I loved Kenny with all my heart, and my heart is broken and a big ole chunk of it is gone with him today," Parton said in the video. The President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for the United States of America. 15 Days to Slow the Spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) presented on March 16, 2020. The disease is in all 50 states now!  An expert said today that we need 30 days to hunker down and stay at home to get ahead of the virus.

UPDATE: Extended to April 30.

The big three auto manufacturers (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) are shutting down all of their plants in North America today, March 18, 2020.

The Dow Jones U. S. stocks were halted (circuit breakers) for trading for 15 minutes today.

Delta Airlines will lose over 2 billion dollars in revenue in March and is cutting 70% capacity due to people not flying and cancellations.

Crude oil is under $22 a barrel as of March 18, 2020. It used to be over $100 at one time. Oil is at an 18 year low!

California Governor issued a statewide order to "stay at home" for 40 million residents effective Thursday evening, March 19, 2020.

Based on indications from experts, we might need 30 days because people are still moving all over the country, spreading the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease in 50 states now.

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) appears to be very serious as of today. We need to flatten the curve!

Patti Labelle, Kenneth Edmonds (Babyface) and Tamia Grant performed on February 16, 2020.

Grammy-Award winner Patti LaBelle can still hit the high notes after a 50-year career. She told us she was 75 years old. She walked out in her heels and two minutes later, she kicked them off and begun her performance in flats or slippers. If you have not heard Patti live recently or never at all, you need to attend one of her performances.

Grammy-Award winner (11 awards) Babyface still has Whip Appeal, and he let us know during his performance. Babyface performed many of his favourites along with a few popular old school hits such as Earth Wind and Fire “Reasons”, Bobby Brown “Every Little Step You Take”, “Tender Roni” and “Rock Wit’ Cha Baby.” Babyface mentioned Luther Vandross and we thought he was going to perform one of his songs but he said he respects Luther too much to try and sing one of his songs but he did have one of his singers perform a Tevin Campbell song, “Can We talk For a Minute.” The singer sounded like El Barge.

Tamia Hill started a great night of music with a solid performance.  Hill stated she has been married for over 20 years. Although Tamia did not mention her husband, I noted that she is married to former NBA star, Grant Hill. Tamia performed many of her hits including the Quincy Jones produced “You Put a Move On My Heart.”

It was a great night of musical performances for the audience that appreciated the music of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.

U. S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor spoke at the Texas Book Festival in the State Capitol House Chamber on Sunday, October 27, 2019.

We were honored to welcome United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the Texas Book Festival with her wonderful recently released picture book, “Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You.” The book encourages young readers (and all of us) to embrace our differences and love who we are.

In the picture book, Sotomayor encourages others to “Just Ask” when they meet someone different from them.

Sotomayor mentioned when a woman saw her putting away her needle after an insulin injection in a small restaurant restroom, Sotomayor later heard the woman whisper to her companion as she was leaving, “ she’s a drug addict.” Sotomayor said she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetic since she was 7 ½ years old. Sotomayor asked the children in the audience to calculate how long she has had diabetes after she told them her age of 65.  Somomeyer she has been giving herself insulin shots her entire life. Sotomayor said she was ashamed for many years because of the insulin shots.

Sotomayor said this incident inspired her to write this book. Sotomayor had been thinking about this book for over 30 years, but she had another day job. It has taken Sotommeyer over 30 years to figure out how to do it.

Sotomayor appeared in conversation with Newbery Medal-honoree Meg Medina.

Somomeyer answered hand-written questions from children read by Medina. Sotomayor later decided to get closer to the audience and walked around to hug the children in the audience. She gave the children that asked the questions she answered, the opportunity to be first in the book signing line.

Sotomayor answered questions and told life stories for a little over an hour in House Chamber.

Five-time Grammy Award winner, James Taylor performed in Austin at the Erwin Center. There was no doubt about love being in the air, and Carolina was in my mind this Wednesday night in February. Taylor performed a couple of my favorite songs, “You’re Got a Friend” and “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You” (also performed by Marvin Gaye). This was a good night to remember. © Michael Lewis Global Photography, All Rights Reserved

The UT Black Homecoming Weekend 2019 celebration was off the chart. People traveled from all over the country to celebrate again this year. There were approximately 1K Black people in front of the UT Tower watching the football game on four big-screen televisions, networking and celebrating. This was an outstanding UT Black Homecoming Weekend at the Tower based on crowd-pleasing Black fraternities and sororities step shows during half time, on-point music during the football breaks, and people enjoying the atmosphere and football game.

Common, Chicago rapper and actor came to Austin City Limit, Moody Theater on Tuesday, August 27, 2019. When Common came on stage to an excited crowd, he sat down in a leather chair on stage and turned on the lamp sitting next to the chair. He seemed to meditate for a moment before he started his performance with Show Me, Southside and The Corner. © 2019 Michael Lewis Global Photography, All Rights Reserved

Let me tell you, Common showed up and showed out. His energetic freestyle performance lyrics were in part about relationships, love, faith, community, and God. If you were looking for wardrobe changes every 20 minutes, you were in the wrong place. Common changed from a blue shirt to a black one for the encore where he performed Aphrodisiac, The People, The Lonius, Resurrection, and one of his songs (My Fancy-Free Future Love) on his new album, “Let Love Have The Last Word” scheduled to be released on August 30, 2019. This is Common’s first album since “Black America Again” in 2016.

Common told me that he enjoyed coming to Austin and that he loved the city, and it showed. The audience picked his energy and gave Common plenty of love. Common even invited a fan on the stage. Ms.Kareem, one of his background singers, had an amazing voice. For a moment the band played Stevie Wonder’s song, “Overjoyed” and Tears For Fear, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.” The audience recognized these songs and started singing the lyrics. Common said the Austin audience and crowd was incredible. Common also thanked the audience for their support throughout the years and for ACL for having him here.

Common’s new memoir, also titled Let Love Have The Last Word is a revealing look into his life as he details his struggles with the emotional difficulties of being molested as a young boy by a family member. An attempt to heal and to help other victims, Common is opening himself up about the pain of his past for the first time.

Common is an American rapper and actor. His first Grammy Award was in 2003 for Best R&B Song for "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)" with Erykah Badu. Its popularity was matched by May 2005's Be, nominated in the 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. Common was awarded his second Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, for "Southside" (featuring Kanye West), from his July 2007 album Finding Forever. Common has also initiated a burgeoning acting career, starring significant roles in such films as Smokin' AcesStreet KingsAmerican GangsterWantedTerminator SalvationDate Night, Just WrightHappy Feet Two, and New Year's Eve. He also narrated the award-winning documentary Bouncing Cats, about one man's efforts to improve the lives of children in Uganda through hip-hop/b-boy culture.

Three-time Grammy-nominated rapper, Rapsody (Marlanna Evans) started the evening at the ACL Moody Theater. The North Carolina native released her third album, “Eve.”   Rapsody dedicated her new album to Sisterhood and legendary Black women who paved the way for her.

Wilhelmina R. Delco is pictured attending the African Summer Fest Fashion Show on Saturday. Delco proudly mentioned to me that she would be 90 years old on Tuesday, July 16. Please help me wish my friend a happy birthday.  Delco is one of the best public servants and educators in the State of Texas. She cares about people.

Did you know that Delco was the first African-American elected to the school board in Travis County? Delco was also the first African-American to serve as a Democrat in the Texas House of Representatives in District 50. She served for over 20 years.

Thank you Wilhelmina Delco for more than 30 years of public service and leadership.

Frankie Beverly and Maze will be back again Sunday night at the Essence Festival this year. In addition to performing their own set, Maze will be saluted during a brief “tribute performance” by R&B singer-songwriter Anthony Hamilton.

Frankie Beverly and Maze closed out the first 15 nights of the Essence Festival, inspiring a mass “electric slide” across the Dome floor every year.  Looking to put a fresh face on the festival, a new administration at Essence magazine and a new producer for the festival phased out Beverly. Over the past decade, he has instead performed each spring at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Beverly last performance at the Essence Festival was in 2015 on Friday, July 3.

Nimoy stated that he thought he would die of lung cancer one day, but he was wrong. He died of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  The symptoms of this disease are shortness of breath, chronic cough, and wheezing in part. You might have seen a commercial on television with Nimoy’s wife (Susan)  talking about COPD. After viewing the movie “Remembering Leonard Nimoy,” I felt compelled to speak about smoking of any form. Nimoy was my favorite character in the three-year television series, “Star Trek.” Nimoy quoted, “Life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory.” Take heal and “Live long and Prosper.” What is your legacy? What is your Final Frontier?

A heartwarming movie about Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy and COPD. If you smoke, look at this movie. If you like to Live long & Prosper, Take a look. https://www.kcet.org/shows/remembering-leonard-nimoy/episodes/remembering-leonard-nimoy

The Jamestown Revival's will release a new album, San Isabel on June 14. Wow, this has been a tough month. Tim Conway died this morning at the age of 85. Tim Conway always appeared on the Carol Burnett Show. Tim and Carol always had me rolling with laughter. Carol used to end her show with, "I'm so glad we had this time together, Just to have a laugh or sing a song, Seems like we just got started and before you know it, Comes the time we have to say so long, Goodnight!" Rest in Peace Tim. We will miss you. CarolBurnettFan

25th-anniversary curations and a fresh take on our night-by-night line-up, this year’s milestone Festival will creatively represent some of our culture’s most important and influential bodies of work – past, present and future. If you have not heard by now, Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters at Augusta National on Sunday. Woods hugged his son just like he hugged his dad (Earl Woods) when he won the Masters in 1997. Woods have not had a chance to wear the green jacket since 2005. When Woods tried on the green jacket, he said: “It fits.” Woods had a remarkable comeback on Sunday against some of the best golfers in the world to win his fifth Masters title. Woods let out an emotional roar of celebration after he tapped in his final putt. When Woods was here in Austin playing at the Dell Matchplay and reached the Round of 8, it was just a warmup for the Masters. Woods has been through a lot over the years. I could tell that Woods was just as a favorite in Augusta as he was here in Austin. It was obvious when Woods made a good shot, the crowd was always louder, and the other players knew it. Woods shot a final round score of 70 to finish 13 under par. Congratulations Tiger on your 2019 Masters win.

Sandra Bland - Say Her Name Movie & Discussion https://www.atxdigitalphotography.com/blog/2019/2/sandra-bland---say-her-name-movie-discussion sandrabland2sandrabland2

February 7, 2019 would have been Sandra Bland's 32nd birthday but according to the police in Hempstead, Waller County, Texas she hung herself inside of a jail cell on July 13, 2015, three days after being arrested for a traffic stop by DPS. Sandra only needed $500 to bond out of jail. They also said that the garbage bag used to commit suicide did not have any finger prints on it. For some reason, whenever Black people die via cops or jail cells, there are more questions than answers. The documentary movie, “Say My Name” was shown on Sandra’s birthday at Wildflower Church in Austin, Texas. After the movie, a panel discussion was held by Fatima Mann, Meme Styles and Farah Muscadin. The panel and the women in the audience had different viewpoints concerning the movie. Some thought more family members should have been in the movie and the unification of Black organizations shown as of now while others thought that the producers were doing the best job possible with the information they had at the time and as each person watched the movie and time pasted, viewpoints were constantly evolving. The HBO documentary about the death of Sandra Bland. Kevin O'Leary on Wealth in Austin https://www.atxdigitalphotography.com/blog/2019/2/kevin-oleary-on-wealth-in-austin Kevin-O'Leary-Wealth-Austin-Texas (6)Kevin-O'Leary-Wealth-Austin-Texas (6)Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank was in Austin, Texas on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. © 2019 Michael Lewis Global Photography All Rights Reserved

Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank was in Austin, Texas on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

O’Leary has been on Shark Tank for 11 seasons and he does not see Shark Tank ending any time soon. He thinks he would be dead before they stop producing Shark Tank episodes. O’Leary stated Shark Tank is a huge marketing tool. Businesses do not have to accept a deal from the sharks to become successful. A perfect illustration of this fact is the Ring Video doorbell and monitoring service. Jamie Siminoff, Inventor of Ring rejected an offer by Kevin O’Leary in 2013 but after being on the Shark Tank, Siminoff rebranded the company and it received an additional 5 million dollars in sales.

It has been said that the Ring Video doorbell is like caller ID for the front door and help catch crooks from stealing packages delivered by UPS, FedEX, Amazon and USPS.

Ring was sold to Amazon in February 2018 for an estimated value of up to 1.8 billion dollars.

Here are some valuable nuggets from Kevin O’Leary on Tuesday.

The Golden Rules of Investing according to Kevin O’Leary

Diversification is the only free lunch in investing, never have more than 5% in any one position.

There are 11 sections in the S&P, never own any more than a 20% position in any one sector.

Never own a position that does not return capital.

Own at least 35% fixed income at any time including real estate.

Position preservation above performance.

Keep 10% in cash at all times because shit happens.

Effective Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneur able to articulate opportunity in 90 seconds or less (like an elevator pitch).

Successful in convincing investors that they were the right team to execute the business plan.

Know your business numbers and have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of your business models.

Kevin O’Leary has an estimated net worth 400 million dollars.

Levar Burton was in Austin Sunday November 11 at the Paramount Theater with his Levar Burton Reads Live tour. The live tour is an extension of Burton’s LeVar Burton Reads podcast. He selects a story by a writer who lives in each city of the tour. He reads the stories aloud along with sound effects and music, and then he brings the writer on stage for a discussion and a 30 minute Q & A session from the audience. Burton selected Kendra Foremeyer as his featured writer in Austin. He read a segment from her book, “Hole in the Middle”.  There are not many people who can read a book better than LeVar Burton. You really need to hear him. Foremeyer stated that this was the first time her book has been read to an audience and she was quite surprised by the audience’s reaction. She did not anticipate the laughter when certain parts were read and the wide audience enjoyment of her book.

LeVar Burton (actor, educator & director) has been an icon since 1977. LeVar Burton made his film acting debut in 1977 when he played Kunta Kinte in the ABC award-winning drama series Roots, based on the novel by Alex Haley.  Burton was host and executive producer of "Reading Rainbow" on PBS from 1983 to 2006, making it one of the longest-running children's programs on the network. Reading Rainbow helped to inspire generations of children to read books. Burton stated Sunday that reading extends your imagination. In 1986, Gene Roddenberry, Executive Producer of the original television series Star Trek, approached Burton with the role of the Lieutenant Geordi La Forge in the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series. Burton’s character was blind but is granted sight through the use of a prosthetic device called a Visor worn over his eyes. After the second season, La Forge had become the chief engineer of the starship USS Enterprise-D in the series. La Forge was also in subsequent films based on Star Trek: The Next Generation, starting with Star Trek Generations in 1994 through Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002. Burton directed two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and several episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise.

Burton proudly stated on Sunday that his wife, Stephanie Cozart-Burton and his daughter Michaela was with him on his tour and in the audience.
