The Austin Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Peter Bay, delivered a stellar performance at the Long Center's Michael & Susan Dell Hall on Saturday, May 17. The evening showcased Gershwin’s timeless masterpiece, Porgy and Bess, as part of the Masterworks Series program.
The concert began with a captivating blend of contemporary and classic pieces, setting the stage for an evening of unforgettable music. Opening with Carlos Simon’s moving “Amen!”, the orchestra explored themes of faith and resilience with soul-stirring melodies. Following a brief intermission, the audience was treated to Gershwin’s iconic opera, Porgy and Bess, featuring beloved songs like “Summertime” and “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’.”
The performance brought to life the vibrant streets of 1920s Charleston, South Carolina, immersing listeners in a timeless narrative of love and redemption. The Stars of Porgy and Bess, including Kenneth Overton as Porgy, Laquita Mitchell as Bess, Frank L. Humphrey III as Sportin’ Life, and Karen Slack as Serena, delivered powerful and moving renditions. The Quinlan Singers added an extra layer of depth and emotion to the evening.
