The Wiz Musical Tour is set to perform at the University of Texas (UT) Bass Concert Hall from May 12 to May 17.

This touring production will debut at UT’s Bass Concert Hall on May 12, as part of the Texas Performing Arts’ 2025-26 Broadway in Austin season.

According to assistant director Alan Mingo Jr., who also plays the Wiz, The Wiz Musical is "a retelling of the story from the Black perspective." He adds, "What we did right with this production is we made it timeless" by adapting it for younger audiences and generations.

This production is a revival of the 1974 Tony Award-winning all-Black Broadway hit. The current staging of The Wiz reinterprets the original from the Seventies by situating it in a contemporary 2020s context, making it relevant for modern viewers and future generations. Inspired by both the play and Sidney Lumet’s 1978 film adaptation featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, director Schele Williams (The Notebook), choreographer JaQuel Knight, and TV writer Amber Ruffin (who contributes additional material to the book) infuse modern perspectives, language, and music into their celebration of Black Oz.

Mingo notes, "Musically, we took out the sound of the Seventies and freshened up the underscore of the music," highlighting the incorporation of hip-hop elements into the original soul and funk score. Additionally, the production features contemporary slang and cultural references, as stated by star Phoenix Assata LaFreniere, who is making her debut in the role of Dorothy.

LaFreniere says the chance to present an all-Black creative team and perspective on this historically white American classic is "very powerful." In a time marked by significant political division, federal attempts to dismantle DEI policies, and ongoing racial violence and persecution, this representation is arguably more crucial than ever.

By honoring and showcasing the roots of Black culture, Mingo aspires for the show to unite audiences from diverse backgrounds and identities. He explains that two audience members may initially respond differently to the performance, but by the conclusion, their reactions and emotions will converge.
