Smokey Robinson in Austin Texas 2022
By Michael Lewis, ATX Digital Media, Nokoa The Observer Smokey Robinson was back on stage at H-E-B Center in Cedar Park on Friday, May 20, 2022, after a few postponements. Robinson has not performed in Austin since March 22, 2016, at the Travis County Expo Center. Ooo Baby Baby, Smokey had an outstanding performance Friday night singing some of his Motown favorites. This is the 60th anniversary of Motown.
Robinson said he was speechless after the long applause after the performance of “Ooo Baby Baby”. People were dancing in the aisles during the performance of “My Girl”. Robinson stated that Stevie Wonder wrote a track and needed Robinson to write a song to it during a meeting one evening. Robinson joking said Wonder was ready to drive Robinson home to get started on it. The song was “Tears of a Clown”. Robinson had the audience singing “Tears of a Clown” during his performance. Robinson told a story about his family playing 8-track tapes, 78 rpm records, and 45 rpm records back in the day. He said most young people have never seen or played the aforementioned tapes and records.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Robinson said he is learning Spanish and he even performed a new song, “La Mirada” in Spanish. It is on Smokey Robinson’s website. Robinson was telling stories, singing, dancing, and telling jokes. Robinson had a full band and the Sienna String Quartet, two singers, and a drummer (a crowd favorite), Tony Lewis to accompany him on stage. Robinson ended the show with his 1979 song “Cruisin’ ” and invited three people on stage to dance with him.
![]() ![]() This was a great 90-minute Smokey Robinson concert. It was worth the wait from previous postponements.
